The transfer market in club football has gotten a bit silly over the past few years. This past summer was a prime example of player values becoming increasingly inflated.
Five of the Top 12 most expensive transfers in soccer history took place in this last window, with Morgan Rogers and Elliott Anderson commanding shocking transfer fees. But perhaps the most consequential transfer wasn’t a transfer at all.
Julian Alvarez‘s messy situation with Atletico Madrid dominated the LaLigaheadlines during the World Cup and leading up all the way to the new season. Alvarez wanted out, specially to FC Barcelona, but Atleti were unwilling to budge on his release clause price – a whopping $580 million.

Ultimately, Alvarez will stay with Madrid at least until the next window. When that window comes, things will look a lot different in the transfer market, and that’s in part thanks to Alvarez.
FIFA will amend Article 17 starting on January 1, 2027 – in time for the next transfer window
Beginning on January 1, 2027, FIFA is set to amend Article 17 of their Regulations for the Status and Transfer of Players. The new amendment will, in their view, protect players in situations like Alvarez’s by essentially stopping clubs from setting absurd release clause prices.
Clubs will now have to set their release clauses in player contracts to the tune of true market value. In theory, this should allow players to leave places they don’t want to be at more easily, while also protecting clubs once the contract is terminated.
