TIRANA — Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha has returned to Albania following a week-long visit to the United States—marking his first trip to the country since being designated non grata by the U.S. State Department.
Speaking to reporters upon his arrival at Tirana International Airport in Rinas, Berisha addressed his participation alongside Republican Party figures in Texas, describing the mission as one of the most pivotal political engagements of his career.
According to Berisha, the Albanian delegation attended at the invitation of the International Democrat Union (IDU) and the American Leadership Institute. He noted that the delegation, which included Republican Party ally Fatmir Mediu, held a series of meetings with members of the U.S. Congress, the Senate, and representatives connected to the Trump administration.
Berisha focused much of his statement on former President Donald Trump’s address at the gathering, arguing that its core themes sent a direct warning to Prime Minister Edi Rama’s administration.
“Trump’s address without question has deeply unsettled the head of the narco-state and his ruling circle,” Berisha stated, referencing his ongoing characterization of the Rama government. “In his speech, Trump repeatedly identified the communist threat and illicit narcotics trafficking as the two greatest perils facing the American nation—the very two pillars upon which the current regime in Tirana rests.”
